THE CAKE
THE STORY
We are fortunate
to have our dear friends Melody
Layne and Tara Betterman to thank for our
marriage. They were one of the families brave enough to be
named on the lawsuit against the state and tipped us off
at 11:30am that the judge had ruled in our
favor. The Marion County Clerk's office reported that they
would begin issuing marriage licenses immediately. Stacey
was on service and her boss took her call
responsibilities. I was about to enter a dissertation
proposal and my amazing student, thinking nothing of her
own preparation, deadline and anxiety, called it off to
reschedule- hugging and shooing me away. 8 more students
allowing me to reschedule a class and meetings. We could
have never imagined that, even then, we would be the first
lesbian couple married in the state of Indiana! What an
honor for us. But most importantly, even though we did not
have friends or family by our side - we know undoubtedly
how loved and supported we have been. A huge thank to our
places of work, where we have never hidden our
relationship or family, and to ur families who on both
sides have embraced us wholeheartedly. And please remember
those for whom the fight continues. Even today in Indiana
many counties refused to grant marriage licenses, even
though legally allowed.
