President's Column

For me, this quote is a reminder that we all have gifts to bring to ADPTC. When I
became the director of the training clinic at UNC Chapel Hill six years ago, I was
overwhelmed and could never have imagined becoming president of ADPTC. I deeply
value the professional and personal relationships that have developed for me over the
years within ADPTC; this organization has truly been my professional support group
from the very beginning of my tenure. I hope that many of you will become actively
involved in our organization through joining a committee, commenting on the listserv
and attending the mid-winter meetings.
During the past few years our organization has seen tremendous growth in terms
of our involvement in the competencies movement and the recognition of practicum
training as an essential ingredient of doctoral level education in professional psychology.
Given the pace of this growth, there have been concerns expressed on the listserv from
time to time that we might be losing our focus on supporting the work of individual
training clinic directors. I would like to affirm that this remains our primary goal. Our
inter-organizational work will continue to be in the service of our commitment to each of
you. My goal for the two years of my presidency will be to consolidate our work on
behalf of individual training clinic directors and to continuing to develop our inter-
organizational relationships.
I hope that many of you will join us at the upcoming conference in San Antonio
for our mid-winter meeting (January 17-20) which will be held in conjunction with
CUDCP. With very special thanks to Karen White, Rob Heffer and the program
committee we are anticipating a really excellent mid-winter meeting with a focus on
practicum training and supervision. The program includes nationally recognized
speakers, a full day of joint programming with CUDCP and a full day of ADPTC
programming. In addition, we will be hosting a reception for new members (all are
welcome and encouraged to attend) on the first afternoon of the conference and
opportunities for informal group dinners on each of the evenings. These social events are
designed to encourage networking among our members. See you in Texas!

This photo was taken last summer on my trip to Australia to visit training clinics. Judy Hyde,
training clinic director at the University of Sydney, was my excellent host. The photo was taken
at the edge of the Daintree Rainforest in North Queensland.
