President-Elect's Column
Bob Hatcher robhatch@umich.edu

August. Brian Lewis has set a high standard by his initiative and involvement in our Association.  I hope to build on his excellent work and to benefit from his counsel. I want to tell you about the agenda for the Annual Business Meeting to be held at APA on Saturday August 21st from 12:00 to 1:50 pm in Fairfax Room B of the Sheraton Boston Hotel. I would also like to mention briefly some issues I hope to focus on during the next year.

Mid-Winter Meeting Initiatives to be Discussed in Boston

The members attending the Mid-Winter meeting in Chicago (see Brian Lewis' column) developed several initiatives that we will review at our meeting in Boston:

  • Bylaws Revision, including new statement of purpose and election procedures (see Rob Heffer's column). We will vote on these.
  • A proposed set of guidelines and standards for Training Clinics, designed to assist Clinic Directors to define and consolidate their positions and the roles of their Clinics. We'll discuss and these guidelines and perhaps vote on their adoption.
  • Discussion (and vote) on a proposed dues increase.
  • Brian Lewis will tell us about the Practicum Survey he is developing with APPIC and the APA BEA.
  • Committee Chairs will give brief reports on their work, including the Resources (see Lee Cooper's column)  and the Newsletter Committees.
  • We will hopefully have time for some issues and questions to be raised by the members in attendance.

ADPTC Objectives for 1999-2000

Our overall aims for the ADPTC include advocating for the interests of Practicum Clinics at the national level and providing useful resources to Clinic Directors. Brian's initiative with CCTC and the APA is a major advance for our organization's national role. We also hope to focus on enhancing the Association's direct usefulness to its members:

  • The Chicago group established a Resources Committee, now chaired by Lee Cooper, which will gather and, on request, distribute to members effective examples of Clinic manuals, training evaluation forms and policies, informed consent forms, and others (please make suggestions and send materials to Lee). The committee is also working to provide special deals for our membership on tests and forms we need (e.g., the OQ45, a new, state-of-the-art outcome questionnaire for routine use in Clinics). These tasks were formerly taken on by the hard working Secretary/Treasurer.
  • Further, the Guidelines and Standards for Clinics document should benefit our members as each of us works to develop effective administrative and clinical

leadership in his or her Clinic. We would very much appreciate your suggestions as to other ways the Association can be of help to the membership.

  • In conjunction with our advocacy and resources initiatives, we hope to bring old members back to the organization and to recruit new ones. If you know of Clinic Directors who are not  members of our organization,  please encourage them to (re-) join or let us know who they are and we'll send them an invitation!

Final Thoughts

I am looking forward to a good year and am seeking your help and input to get it that way!  Best wishes.
