Business Meeting Minutes
Mid-Year Meeting, Santa Barbara, CA, March 16-18, 2006

Rob Heffer - Congratulations offered:

  • to Kim Fuller her programming efforts;
  • to Steve Cook for arranging CE credits;
  • to Joe Scardapane for use of the video equipment;
  • and to Suzanne Johnson Smith for hosting the meeting here in Santa Barbara.

Treasurer's Report: Joe Scardapane:

  • When Joe assumed his office ADPTC had a balance of $12,000. The organization took in $6,000 in dues for 2006.
  • Funds from the Santa Barbara conference registration were $3300 and cost of the conference was $8000.
  • Balance as of today is $13,000.
  • Please see attached Treasurer's report for details.

Reports from Committee chairs:

  • Publications & Public Relations - Vic Pantesco and Phyllis Terry Friedman:
    • Phyllis presented an idea to upgrade the current newsletter to a newer web format called a splash page. This upgrade would project a positive impression of ADPTC to other organizations as well as improve readability. Costs would be close to $400/yr. She also suggested that ADPTC publish the newsletter twice a year following the annual and mid-year meetings.
    • Erica Wise concurred.
    • Rob Heffer said that ADPTC needs to clarify the limits of distribution with authors when they give us slides and other materials for the newsletter and/or the website. Further, Rob asked the Publications & Public Relations Committee to handle distribution of the new journal called Training and Education in Professional Psychology. Rob emphasized that any data used for publication must be first be approved by ADPTC President first.
    • Phyllis asked for contributions to the new journal.
    • Karen Saules reported that she needs to learn from the webmaster about hosting the site for the proposed newsletter. Karen suggested that, in addition to continuing the Directors Toolbox and Clinic Spotlight columns, the newsletter publish book reviews. Lastly Karen requested that members provide summaries of complex Listserv discussions.

  • Membership & Resources - Karen Saules and Erica Wise:
    • Karen would like to change the university location at which the listserv is hosted. She reiterated that those who submit documents through the listserv should assume that they will be published on the ADPTC website.
    • Erica is working to organize resources including a review of the member's-only versus the public-access sections of listserv and website. She is working on organizing resources.

  • Collaborations & Liaisons - Lee Cooper:
    • Lee called for reports on collaborative work:
      • CCTC - Vic Pantesco: Vic reported on efforts to use new language to designate trainees in trouble and alternatives are being sought. Linda Forrest and Nancy Elman are publishing soon on the area.
      • CCTC would like predoctoral training programs to measure problems that trainees exhibit over time.
      • APA's CoA - Tony Celluci: The Park City Summit results are available on the CoA website. Information is available on attempts to restructure the assembly so ADPTC can formally provide feedback to CoA on competencies. CCTC discussed language regarding "emerging areas for new models," such as the best language to describe practicum hours. CCTC clarified the reasoning behind elimination of postdoctoral training hours for licensure.
        • Cathy Grus says this is a separate process from APA's educational group process.
        • Erica Wise added that ADPTC has stayed out of political fray in the past and has still offered quality recommendations. She agrees that the postdoctoral year is for specialty training.
      • APPIC and ELC - Phyllis Terry Friedman: This year's focus was diversity. Attendees received advocacy training and visited respective congress-persons to advocate for the GPE. Phyllis emphasized the need for advocacy with local political representatives.
      • Competency Workgroup - Bob Hatcher: CCTC renewed the workgroup on practicum competencies; they now have representatives from many training groups. The overall mission is to solve all problems related to practicum training. The first task is to define goals of practicum training and then to define and describe a minimum practicum. The workgroup is setting up a conference before ELC to look at competencies. Bob says CCTPT & ASPBB have invited him to speak on the competency documents.
        • Cathy Grus, APA representative, discussed a proposal to gather those persons in the training community to discuss measuring competency over stages of training. Delegates will meet 2 days before ELC.
      • CUDCUP - Mary Alice Conroy: ADPTC was lauded at the last meeting. Discussions were held regarding the need for 1) a job analysis of future needs and demands relevant to next generation of psychology students, 2) specialty tracks to help students evaluate and choose university programs, 3) addressing the challenge of recruiting minority students, and 4) clarification of the relationship between internships and doctoral programs.
        • Ron Rozensky mentioned the work force analyses conducted by other professions that are used to lobby on capital hill.
      • Land of OZ - Judy Hyde: Differences between degree names and degree requirements were discussed. Licensure is called "registration" for a Clinical Psychologist. The DPsych is a new degree proposed to incorporate research and clinical work. Australia formed a new board with New Zealand to work on Practicum Guidelines for Psychology Training Clinics. Judy feels that the current masters degree is very similar to the Ph.D. available in the United States. Judy lobbied for an ADPTC meeting to be held in Australia.
      • APA Education Directorate - Cathy Grus: She complimented ADPTC liaisons on their hard work. See the website (www.apa.org--click graduate education and training) for a report on the Advocacy Trust, used to lobby education issues. Website also says how to contribute to the fund.
        • Tony Celluci asked about training for site visitors and Cathy referred to him to her colleague Susan Zlotlow.
        • Rob Heffer suggested an ADPTC pre-conference for those who want this kind of training, as these workshops are generally held before APA meeting.
      • Programs & Conferences - Randall Cox and Rob Heffer: There will be no pre-conference at APA this year. There will be an executive committee planning meeting and a social hour. ADPTC will call for poster presentations in April. Rob stated that Randall Cox will be the program chair for the 2007 mid-year meeting. Randy proposed to make the next mid-year meeting be less ambitious with regard to formal presentations and more interactive.
        • Phyllis Terry Friedman suggested potentially overlapping the mid-year meeting with APICC meeting in San Diego with the executive committee meeting beforehand.
          • Kim Fuller pointed out that we would need a local person to coordinate the meeting.
          • Erica Wise mentioned that APICC only meets every 2 years thus it would be a good time for us to overlap with them.
          • Randall Cox expressed concern that a complete overlap of our meet with APPIC would change the feel of our mid-year meeting.
        • Latrelle Jackson presented her research on the Tidewater, Virginia as a potential meeting location. She proposed three possible locations; Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Regent University conference center, which ADPTC could book at a substantial discount. Latrelle noted that the Tidewater area is less expensive than other cities.
          • Colleen Byrne suggested that we rule out Norfolk.
          • Rob Heffer commented that the ADPTC membership might be interested in a warmer climate.
          • Kim Fuller expressed confidence in Latrelle as an organizer and was supportive of having the meeting at a University.
          • Rob Heffer said that the membership will continue to gather information regarding our options for the 2007 meeting location via listserv exchanges. He praised for Latrelle for her efforts.
      • Survey - Rob Heffer: Data on sections 1-6 of the survey will be available on the website very soon.
