BEA charged Cathi and Cynthia Belar to inform the board in collaboration with APPIC and other training councils. APA asked Cathi to convene a group to hold a meeting regarding match imbalance and generate some action steps. The goal is improve outcome for our graduate students.
- Update on Center for Workforce Analysis. Psychology has lagged behind. A goal is to provide data on career trajectories for graduate students.
10:25 – 10:30 APPIC, Arnold Abels
- Arnold is the new liaison from APPIC who started his term in August. The next biennial APPIC conference is April 2009 in Portland, Oregon. APPIC will also participate in the 2010 CCTC joint conference in Orlando, Florida.
- Arnold thanked the TEPP editors for their hard work on the journal.
- Competencies are important to APPIC and they express appreciation to ADPTC for our work on Practicum Competencies. This work will become even more important with enforcement of the Model Licensure Act.
- The internship supply-demand problem is also an important issue to APPIC. They are providing mentorship to training programs who wish to start internships. Arnold emphasized that truth in advertising is important for graduate programs.
- New initiatives—APPIC newsletter is now electronic; the group is moving to an online internship application process; and, the APPIC directory will no longer be published in hard copy.
- Arnold encourages ADPTC members to view the APPIC website for training resources; there are also 10 different listservs.
- IPR—Informal Problem Resolution w/ Steve McCutcheon is another new initiative.

- Practicum Competencies will be invaluable for dealing with the Model Licensure Act. She offered her thanks to ADPTC.
- Sherry reminded the group that ACCTA has an Internship Clearinghouse at www.accta.net.
- ACCTA is working on competencies at the internship level—sites have noted that site visitors from CoA have been asking about quality and type of clinical training and assessment of competence.
- ACCTA has been focusing on multiculturalism—attempting to increase sensitivity to cultural minorities (selection of meeting location & personalizing elections). Eric Sauer asked for clarification of elections. Sherry says nominations & speeches can happen at the conference instead of only on website. They are also moving to upload video clips of candidate’s speeches on the website.
- Sherry discussed the expansion of the Garrett-Lee-Smith Act, which provides suicide prevention grant funding for campuses. Positions are funded for interns and residents in Counseling Centers. She encouraged our membership to advocate for this.
Reports from the Committee Chairs
10:35 – 10:40 Publications & Public Relations, Phyllis Terry Friedman
- Phyllis would like to have a meeting at 4:30 today regarding the newsletter. Currently, the newsletter is published online twice a year. Phyllis would like to have submissions for more substantive articles. She requested that members consider offering to write a regular column or book reviews. Phyllis says there is an interest in a formal Clinic Director’s toolkit. Please contact Phyllis or Vic Pantesco with ideas for the newsletter—there are many interesting stories out there such as Sean O’Halloran’s clinic tours.
- Update on TEPP, Bob Hatcher—the journal is now a benefit of ADPTC membership. The first issue will be arriving in February. Bob was chosen as an Associate Editor, starting in January 2008. Emil Rodolfa is Editor in Chief. Bob requested contact from anyone interested in doing TEPP reviews. He urged members to write papers and submit them to the journal. The next TEPP issue deals with trauma.
Membership & Resources, Karen Saules & Erica Wise
- Erica reviewed her interest in increasing membership and associate membership. She would like training clinic directors to have dues supported by their university.
10:40 – 10:50 Website/Listserv, Karen Saules
- Karen reviewed the proposal for a website upgrade, some highlights of which are the ability to pay dues and conference fees online with credit cards; to update personal information online; to quickly identify new members; and to print receipts right away. Jen Schwartz wanted to know if the website could include a link to the Google Groups listserv. Kim Lassiter supports this 100%. Erica says that Executive Committee will discuss the financials carefully.
10:50 – 10:55 Treasurer’s Report, Joe Scardapane
- Joe explained the increases in dues and conference fees and thanked members for their patience. There are no plans to raise dues for the near future. Michelle Carro wanted to know about the membership year. Joe explains that fiscal year now starts in September.
- Joe reviewed the Treasure’s report. After conference and journal fees ADPTC will have $8,815.00. The money will be spent upgrading the website and sending representatives to national meetings. Bill Rae asked about establishing a cushion fund.
- ADPTC has 90 full members and 16 associate members.
- A total of 60 members attended the conference this year.
10:55 – 11:00 Diversity, Elaine Shpungin in abstentia

The committee is developing toolbox for Directors about Diversity Training. Randy encouraged members to sign up for this committee.
- Erica says we could use the website to solicit talks and papers regarding diversity.
- Elaines’ report mentioned the development of the ADPTC Diversity forum located on the Google Groups website.
- A future project of interest is to analyze data from the Clinic Diversity survey. Based on the data, the committee intends to create a report for ADPTC members, write and publish a manuscript, and create a virtual toolbox for clinic directors.
11:00 – 11:05 Research, Eric Sauer
- This was a quiet year for the committee. The Practice Research Network is now shifting to Clinic-specific research questions. The OQ is turning out to be a good measure. Eric will contact Lambert (author of OQ).
- Judy Hyde mentioned that she pays $100/yr to use Lamberts website for the OQ45.2. Cindy Messina wants to know what problems folks might be having with PRN, Lambert’s website, etc.
- Those of you in tenure track positions have to do research. Eric is now writing about integrating science and practice in training clinics. Eric encouraged the group to “write about what you do” and to “add measures to intake packet and do archival research.
- Erica asked if the committee could meet during lunch.
- Karen Saules asked if a reference list could be posted on the ADPTC webpage.

- The Executive Committee is now thinking about next recipient for Jean Spruill Award and Friend of ADPTC Award

11:20 – 11:40 Administrative Guidelines, Brian Lewis
- Brian reported that the committee met for 2 hours yesterday to make revisions to the document. He notes that many people have gotten involved and that the Administrative Guidelines Document has become a political tool for persons outside of the organization. In recognition of the importance of the document, more time has been spent to carefully revise the language. A conference call in December helped to clarify which issues to address. Brian emphasized that the guidelines are aspirational. Brian will make changes and send the document to the Executive Committee within 2 weeks. He hopes to have ADPTC approval in a few months.
- Tony expressed approval for the process described above.
- Erica said she believes the aspirational language will work well.
11:40 – 12:00 Programs & Conferences, Karen White
- Erica expressed her appreciation to Karen White for all her hard work.
- Most attendees were in favor of ADPTC-only meeting for 2009. The membership expressed a desire to bring the focus back to our own organization and the needs of training clinics. Erica proposed Chapel Hill as a location for the 2009 Mid-Year Meeting and received a favorable response.
- Bob Hatcher explained the purpose of 2010 joint meeting in Orlando, 2/10-2/13. He is chair of the programming committee for this meeting and Tony Cellucci is assisting. Bob will post tentative programming to the listserv with requests for input.
12:00 Meeting Adjourned, Erica Wise
At the January 2008 ADPTC-CUDCP shared Mid-Year Meeting in San Antonio, ADPTC presented Jeff Baker, Ph.D., ABPP with the “Friend of ADPTC Award” in recognition of his long-standing dedication and support of high standards of training and practice in professional psychology doctoral training clinics. Jeff is only the second recipient of this recognition. In August 2006, Paul Nelson, Ph.D., was ADPTC’s first “Friend” award recipient. Jeff, in his APPIC role, initiated a connection with ADPTC at our 2003 Mid-Year Meeting in Houston. He served as the APPIC liaison to ADPTC since then until Fall 2007. Early on, he recognized the value of ADPTC work and was a consistent and supportive champion of our organization’s increased visibility and input into APPIC, BEA, CCTC, and CoA professional training issues. He recognized ADPTC’s strengths, enriched our activities, and was key to the development of the 2007 ADPTC-APPIC shared Mid-Year Meeting in San Diego. Although his role within professional organizations has changed, Jeff will always be recognized as a friend to ADPTC.
